Beauty Pageant Tip

Beauty Pageant

Serious preparation and tough competition are twin realities behind the glamour of contests of physical appearance.  Audiences may see well-proportioned bodies, stunning looks, and stunning smiles, but experienced and successful competitors know that it is really a matter of hard work and know how.  Everyone needs help when they start contesting, and most winners owe their successes to timely beauty pageant tips.

Humility and a willingness to learn and improve are the hallmarks of top achievers in the world of beauty contests.  You must be willing to adapt to the needs of every situation, and sitting on a high horse of pride never helps, no matter how good looking and smart you may be.  Treating organizers, fellow contestants, and judges with consideration and respect, will take you much further than trying to throw your weight around or foul-mouthing others.  It is tempting to indulge in gossip, but do not forget that nothing exchanged in confidence in a contest environment remains a secret for long!  Anything you say or do could be held against you, and you are watched virtually all the time.  So even if you forget all the other beauty pageant tips that come your way, do remember to keep a haughty ego behind when you leave for a contest!

Beauty pageant tips & secrets

there are many examples of where it has worked. At the top of the pile Sharon Stone, Jodie Foster and many others began their careers with model competitions. On a different level but still an impressive one are Liliani and Jackie Turner, both UK glamour models are former Miss Great Britain and Miss England respectively. There are countless other examples of models, actresses, TV presenters or general celebrities that were once beauty queen's or wannabe beauty queens. Being in beauty competitions can give a young model exposure and confidence. Also, the label of 'Miss .. whatever' can create an interest that a new face alone cannot get. At the very least an entrant can most probably get local newspaper coverage. This can hence lead to regional including local tv news which can be good press. If the competition is national then the newspapers including the tabloids may do a feature and there are also female magazines. All of this can be fantastic experience and can help to build up your book and contacts within the industry.

However, no matter how much interest from aspiring beauty queens, not forgetting the keen eye of 'Jo Public', the 'fashion' industry are often keen to keep their distance. Even beautiful girls that have been hugely successful on what has developed into a circuit of competitions will struggle to be taken seriously by a fashion model agency. In fact, I would say a title could go so far as to damage a young models potential. Hence the likelihood of a beauty competition entrant ending up in the 'glamour modeling' section of the industry - see our page on this for more details. Often, it is the only area of modeling that will have an interest in such a girl which some may consider to be odd?

Beauty Pageants: Runways to Fame?

At malls and hotels across the country, kids and young adults take the stage, smiling and cooing for judges, hoping to be the next beauty pageant winner. Many parents spend thousands of dollars on pageants hoping that their child will become the next supermodel or a famous movie star. The truth is that few are discovered that way.

Before entering into a beauty pageant, parents should consider the following questions:

* How long has the company been operating pageants? Who are the directors? Usually pageants are operated by for-profit organizations that solicit participants by mail or print advertising, or by broadcast media, to compete for recognition and prizes from the promoter.

* What is the total cost of pageant participation for both the entrant and the chaperone? Oftentimes, family or business sponsors are asked to pay a sponsorship fee, which can vary, to the pageant promoter to cover hotel rental fees, awards, administrative costs, salary for company personnel and company profits.

* Can the location (place of business) of the pageant company be verified? Where and when will the actual pageant be held? What accommodations are provided for contestants? Will there be adequate supervision?

* Who are the judges and what are their qualifications? Do they have any affiliation with the company?

* Are refunds possible if a contestant decides to withdraw from the pageant?

* How are the winners chosen? What criteria are used for selection?

* What are the obligations of the winning contestant?

* What do former contestants and winners have to say about the pageant? Ask the company for references.

* Finally, what benefit will be derived from participating or winning?

Tips on What Not to Do at Beauty Pageants

Tip # 1

Do not wear gloves in the beauty gown competition. Judges do not like girls to try to overdo it. They do not want to be distracted by extras.

Tip # 2

Do not forget to smile. You know the old saying; never let them see you sweat. Do not let your fear on stage show. Practice, practice, and practice your smile so that is shows through naturally when you are onstage.

Tip # 3

Know when you are being judged. We mistakenly thought she was being judged the first evening when they had the ball gown ceremony and put a great deal of work into her hair and she looked absolutely perfect. Too bad the judging happened the next night when the gown was worn for the second time. We should have had it steamed before the second night to be rid of wrinkles from the night before, and done her hair in the same way.

Tip # 4

Do not eat too much right before the final competition. My daughters dress was tight around her stomach the second night (when she was being judged) as she had just eaten… a lot.

Tip # 5

Do not make the interview outfit too cutesy. The bright pink jacket trimmed with ruffles, paired with a white skirt and tee, did not get a great score. A darker more conservative suit would have scored better.

Tip # 6

Do not do a talent that people cannot follow. My daughter played a classical piece on the piano. Unfortunately, it was not a popular piece and the comments came back saying she should have played stronger. It was supposed to be played softly in key places. OH well, next time, she is doing music that is more popular. She will save the classical stuff for when she is older.

Tip # 7

Do not look green behind the ears, even if you are new to pageants. As you can see from the mistakes she made, we were glowing. Read all you can about pageant preparation, and attend a few pageants as audience members before participating.

Tip # 8

Do not fail to think before you speak at the interview. Think about question the judges may ask as a result of your answers. When my daughter was asked what she like to do, one of the things she said was program html. When asked why, she said because my brother does. While “programming html” is a great answer, “because my brother does” shows that she does not have a mind of her own.

Beauty Pageant Talent Tips

1. Be an entertainer! Whether you are performing a classical sonata or a jazzy dance, you must remember that your audience wants to see a show. Move, smile, express yourself and get lost in your expression.

2. Make yourself unique. Pick a new song, a new instrument, a new dance. Harpists and violinists often find themselves in the top ten in pageants! Yet singers more easily connect with the audience. Know this and evaluate what you do. You must make that connection, whichever way.

3. Practice the hardest parts over and over again, so that when you perform them on stage, they are the very ones that seem the easiest.

4. Visualize your success. Close your eyes for a moment or several minutes. Picture yourself doing the performance of a lifetime. This technique isn't widely used, but those that use it, swear by it.

How to win a beauty pageant

Beauty pageants have been running for probably longer than fashion modeling and come in many forms. There are teen beauty pageants, baby beauty pageants, online beauty pageants and at the highest level, the Miss Universe beauty pageant. Beauty competitions started as small beauty competitions for garden fates and local community events. However, they have grown to a regional, national and now international scale. There are literally hundreds of beauty competitions some more prestigious than others. The main ones in the UK include Miss England and Miss Great Britain which are run by separate organizations. These can lead to international pageants including Miss World and Miss Universe. In the US Miss USA and Miss America are the top beauty competitions. In the US the prizes are the most generous and cash prizes can amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

It must be noted that there is still some criticism of beauty competitions from some quarters. Feminists groups have complained that they are sexist and promote an image of a woman as a commodity that is solely rewarded for her beauty. Others feel that the common 'swim wear' section is outdated and unnecessary. With regard to both of these arguments I can see their points - parading around in a bikini isn't much fun at the best of times! However, increasingly there are men's beauty competitions, which depending on your position could show that the balance between the sexes is evening or that men are becoming an increasingly marketable commodity as women have for years!
