Beautiful Makeup Tips: Mistakes to Avoid and Solutions
Before you make another beauty move, read our cheat sheet on the most common
beauty mistakes -- and how to avoid them:
Mistake #1: Lining lips in dark liner. Very dark lip liner only works if you're
wearing very dark lipstick. Otherwise, it leaves you with an obvious
ring-around-the-lips. It also accentuates fine lines around the mouth.
Fix: Invest in a neutral-colored pencil that works with all lipstick shades.
Mistake #2: Not allowing your moisturizer to absorb before applying makeup. When
powder, concealer, foundation, or blush is applied right over dewy moisturizer,
it tends to slip and slide around your face.
Fix: Give your moisturizer ten minutes to sink in before putting on cosmetics.
Mistake #3: Picking a too-light concealer. Concealer's purpose is to hide dark
areas on your face. If you pick one that's much lighter than your skin, you'll
wind up calling more attention to the area you're trying to hide.
Fix: Buy concealer in a shade that matches your skin exactly or is one shade
lighter.
Mistake #4: Attempting to contour. Trying to sculpt cheekbones with brown powder
usually backfires, making the feature you're trying to hide more noticeable.
Plus, all that brown powder looks a lot like dirt on your face!
Fix: Apply blush to the apples of your cheeks for the most natural look. The
color will highlight the round part of your cheek, naturally making the hollow
underneath more pronounced.
Mistake #5: Wearing too-bright makeup colors. Bold pinks and oranges can look
great for special occasions, but for every day, they're harsh and they age your
skin.
Fix: Choose a neutral makeup palette, based on browns, roses, and beiges. These
tones work for all skin colors and give a glowing -- not garish -- look.
Step-by-Step Guide on how to apply makeup
This is the basics of make-up application. There are many colors and
tools to experiment. Find your look and remember, applying make-up is an art
which makes you look your best.
Start with a clean face.
Apply the foundation with your fingers or a Q-tip in dots in areas of your face.
With a cosmetic sponge, spread the foundation until it is well-blended into the
skin. Be sure to check and make sure that you do not have any lines showing
underneath the chin area.
Next, you will need to apply concealer to any blemishes or under-eye circles
that you may have. You can use a shade lighter than you skin-tone. When applying
concealer to the undereye area, pat gently into the skin and do not rub. Using
your finger, pat the concealer into the skin on the blemish areas also until you
can no longer see the concealer.
Now it is time to set the previous applications by applying translucent face
powder. Get out a big, fluffy powder brush and dip it into some loose facial
powder. You can then apply the powder over your entire face.
Use a lip pencil to outline the lips and make them stand out. The next step will
be to apply lipstick with a lip brush. A lip brush makes the lipstick look
professionally applied. If you put the lipstick on first, it will set the scene
for applying your other make up.
Apply a neutral color eye shadow over the lid and up to the eyebrow. Next put a
lighter shade on the brow bone and blend it in. Use a blending brush to sweep
softly over the lid to blend the shadow in well. Next, apply the eye liner. The
best way to line the eye be to use an eye pencil and draw a line underneath the
lashes. Take a Q-tip or a liner pencil and blend the liner to get a smoky
affect. Last of all, pay special attention to your eyelashes. Use an eyelash
curler and curl the lashes for a few seconds. This will open up your eyes and
make them look more beautiful than ever. At this point, apply a coat of mascara
to the upper lashes and then the lower lashes. A second coat may be used but let
the first coat dry first.
Blush colour should match the colour of your cheeks after exercise. When
selecting colours (particularly foundation) this should be done in daylight to
give you the truest picture.
Always blend your make up in well to avoid streaks. Make sure you cleanse your
face well before applying any makeup, this ensures an even look all over. Keep
brushes clean by washing them in warm water and soap. It is worth investing in a
selection of good quality brushes as this will save you time and effort in the
long run. Do not use any make up that you have had for over 2 years - it is a
false economy and will be hard if not impossible to achieve a natural look.
Beauty and Make up Tips for Teens
Except for parties teenagers should use makeup most sparingly. Not every
teenage girl will win the Miss America contest or become a famous movie star,
but most teens and young women do have one thing in common - they want to feel
beautiful! Women of all ages spend countless hours and hundreds of dollars on
beauty magazines and products in order to achieve that special look.
Powder helps in mixing and setting your foundation right and also adds a natural
glow to your skin. Use loose powder since it gives an even finish and the excess
is easy to remove. However compressed powder is easy to carry around so girls
find that handy.
Keep your make-up light for school. You don't need to use make-up on every
facial feature you have! Mix and match to find out what looks best on you. As a
first step to any successful makeup, always start with your complexion: erase
imperfections. First test a foundation color by applying a thin line of color to
the jaw line. This will allow you to compare color to the skin on the face as
well as the neck to avoid any obvious differences.
The color should blend perfectly with your skin tone. If you're going to use an
eyeliner, a pencil liner looks more natural than liquid liner. Black/Brown
mascara and eyeliner flatters most faces, blondes, brunettes, and redheads.
Black is usually too harsh, especially for blondes. Pinks and peaches blush
tones compliment almost any skin tone. Apply to the apple of your cheeks and
blend outwards, towards your hairline.
Blusher gives your face warmth and makes it livelier. But use it properly since
blush used at wrong places might give quite funny looks. For example if you use
blush too near to your nose, it will draw your face inwards. If you want to make
your eyes appear wide the just sweep some blush outwards. If you want a
chiselled look dab some under your cheekbones.
How to Apply Makeup Tips & Advice
Use a round or wedge-shaped cosmetic sponge, or your fingers, to dot about a
nickel-size amount of foundation along the forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin,
then blend in evenly.
Because of the difficulties in finding the right foundation color, some makeup
experts believe that Brown women should use more than one foundation shade by
blending two shades together or by applying different shades to different areas
of the face (one shade on the T-zone area and another on forehead, cheeks, and
jaw, for example). Some women prefer to have their foundations custom-blended.
In my opinion, it's often too difficult for women to blend makeup on their own
and get consistent color. Custom blending, like that offered by companies like
Prescriptives, is a tremendous advance for Brown women because you can leave the
store with one bottle that is made just for you. However, the downside is higher
cost. If you have not been able to find a color that suits you on your own,
consult a cosmetics counter or makeup artist for expert advice.
To create a polished look for weekdays, follow these steps after you've
washed your face and applied moisturizer (for dry or combination skin) or toner
(oily skin) and sunscreen:
- Apply concealer (one shade lighter than your natural skin tone) to
biotchy or uneven areas using fingers or a makeup sponge to camouflage
discolorations. Blend.
- Apply foundation (the same color as your skin) by dotting it all over
the face and blending evenly with a makeup sponge to create a smooth, even
complexion.
- Dust a layer of translucent powder (or pressed powder the same color as
your foundation) over the face with a makeup brush or powder puff to set
foundation.
- Apply eye shadows, eyeliner, and/or mascara to accent your eyes.
- Apply blush just below cheekbones with a makeup brush or sponge.
- Apply lip liner and two coats of lipstick for the finishing touch.
